Availability of the FEIS
NASA has completed preparation of its Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for proposed demolition and cleanup.
The Notice of Availability (NOA) was published in the Federal Register on March 14, 2014.
NASA considered all comments received on the Draft EIS (DEIS) in preparing the FEIS. Comments received on the DEIS and NASA’s responses to those comments are included as Appendix K.
The members of the SSFL EIS project team would like to thank all of the agencies, organizations, and individuals for their helpful input in developing the EIS. We look forward to continued coordination with you.
Record of Decision
NASA will issue a Record of Decision (ROD) based on the FEIS no sooner than 30 days from the date of publication in the Federal Register of the NOA of the FEIS. NASA's ROD will be made available, once issued, on this website.

Update on NASA’s National Environmental Policy Act Compliance for Santa Susana Field Laboratory
July 18, 2012
NASA remains committed to a proposed cleanup to background that will meet the Administrative Order on Consent between DTSC and NASA.
We received comments from Senator Boxer and the Council on Environmental Quality regarding the evaluation of alternatives for the preparation of our Environmental Impact Statement. As a result, NASA has chosen to streamline its review in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and analyze only the alternatives of (a) cleanup to background and (b) the “no-action” alternative.
NASA is moving forward with preparation of its DEIS and anticipates providing the DEIS for public comment this autumn.
We soon will be posting to our website at http://ssfl.msfc.nasa.gov (this site) this update along with recent correspondence (below) between NASA and Director Raphael, between NASA and Senator Boxer and between the Council on Environmental Quality and Senator Boxer.

EIS Scoping Meetings
NOTICE: The official comment period to submit remarks on NASA's 'scoping' of its Environmental Impact Statement ended September 19, 2011. If you have questions on any aspect of NASA's EIS process or about NASA's cleanup of the site, or if you would like to be added to the distribution list for future electronic updates, please contact Allen Elliot by email at allen.elliot@nasa.gov.
UPDATE: The NASA SSFL EIS Scoping Meeting presentation, as presented at these meetings, is available on this site. In addition, the Environmental Impact Statement for Proposed NASA Environmental Cleanup Activities and Demolition (PDF) fact sheet provides a more information regarding the the proposals and alternatives being considered.
NASA will be holding “scoping meetings” on its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) next week. NASA’s presentations will briefly describe the reasons for the EIS, the range of alternatives and a very general mention of the technical approaches to achieve those alternatives, impact areas to be evaluated and the way historic and archaeologic resources will be considered as we begin to develop the Environmental Impact Statement. The two evening meetings will begin at 6:00 with a chance to informally review posters and talk with a NASA representative at the individual posters about the aspects that the EIS is likely to cover. At about 6:30 NASA will make less than a half hour of presentations, which will be followed by a question-and-answer session between members of the public and NASA. That will be followed by an official opportunity, transcribed by court reporter, to submit public comments on the record. The morning meeting will begin with the informal poster session at 9:30 a.m.
NASA will host meetings with the community at the following locations and dates:
-
August 16 – Chatsworth 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Chatsworth
Hotel
9777 Topanga Canyon Road
Chatsworth, CA 91311
-
August 17 – Simi Valley 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the
Grand Vista
999 Enchanted Way
Simi Valley, CA 93065 -
August 18 – West Hills 9:30 a.m – 12:00 at the Corporate
Pointe at West Hills
8413 Fallbrook Ave.
West Hills, CA 91304
If you have any questions, please contact Allen Elliot by email at allen.elliot@nasa.gov.
The proposed action and potential impacts to the environment and community will be described in an Environmental Impact Statement report.
Comment Period on EIS Scoping
Comments submitted by September 19 will be considered in developing the Environmental Impact Statement. Comments should be submitted to: msfc-ssfl-eis@mail.nasa.gov (Note: Since the comment period has ended, this email address has been disabled).
