NASA is conducting demolition activities in NASA-administered areas at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) as part of its cleanup agreements and to prepare the site for a final cleanup. Demolition activities began in early 2015.
The ELV/Service Area is located in the northern portion of Area II. Structures in this area set for demolition include former engineering offices, maintenance buildings, and what was the expendable launch vehicle (ELV) finally assembly building. In addition to above ground structures, utility poles, piping, concrete and roadways in this area are slated for demolition and removal.
Phase 2 focuses on areas outside of the historic districts where obsolete buildings and infrastructure still remain. This includes Skyline Tanks and Pipelines, the Alfa/Bravo and Coca/Delta Fuel Farms, the Sewage Treatment Plant, the Liquid Oxygen (LOX) Plant, and the former Delta Test Area. Phase 2 is occurring in two sub-phases. Phase 2-A consists of Skyline, the Alfa/Bravo and Coca/Delta Fuel Farms, the Sewage Treatment Plant, and the Liquid Oxygen (LOX) Plant. Phase 2-B covers the former Delta Test Area.
Phase 3 focuses on the removal of ancillary structures and buildings in the Alfa, Bravo, and Coca Test Areas. The six existing test stands and control houses will not be demolished at this time. Demolition in these areas involve obsolete structures such as inactive storage tanks, asphalt parking areas, and dormant office buildings. Phase 3 is occurring it two sub-phases. Phase 3-A will include the Alfa and Bravo Test Areas and Phase 3-B consists of the Coca Test Area.
Phase 4 demolition focuses on the removal of a subsurface concrete slab that remains in Area I LOX, as well as the retaining wall, concrete foundation, and spillway of the former Bravo Test Stand 3.
Phase 5 demolition includes the removal of the two remaining test stands and control house in the Bravo Test Area.
Phase 6 covers the removal of the large Coca Test Stands, the Coca hydrogen sphere, and concrete throughout the Coca Test Area.
Phase 7 includes the demolition of Coca Test Stand 1 and the smaller Coca Test Stand 3.
